GENERAL NOTES

A Message from the President, Jennifer Farmer, AEP

I am honored that the members of Denver Chapter 5 have elected myself as the new President.  I want to take the time to recognize our immediate past President, Paul Jonez, for the leadership he has provided this organization over the last three years.  He continues to volunteer his time and knowledge to help make this transition smooth.  Thank you!

We have an exciting year planned.  September started out the year with a Beers and Business Card event at the Highland Tavern.  It was good to see people again.  October brings our annual Clay Shoot and Auction at Kiowa Creek.  This benefit raises money for our scholarships we give in the Spring.  And, in November and December, we will hold our meetings virtually.  The topics are still being finalized, so stay tuned!

Despite the challenges over the past 18 months, our chapter was awarded a bronze level Chapter Achievement Award.  This award acknowledges individual chapters that promote the mission of ASPE throughout the year. Congratulations!

ASPE Annual Meeting: A Member’s Perspective

As I reflect upon my experience at Estimator’s Summit held this year in San Antonio, TX. I was very impressed with the events and activities. Since joining ASPE back in 2001, I have had the opportunity to attend and participate in eight Regional Meetings and seven Summits. I attended all the Educational and Professional Development Seminars offered at this event.  The topics and professional speakers were outstanding. Kicking off this event was a Welcome Reception where we meet new people and renew friendships nurtured over the years at previous Summit events.

Starting on Thursday, August 26th through Friday, August 27th we had great topics.  To list a few:

  • The Lifecycle of Estimating: Bidding with More Data and Less Guts
  • Estimating Turnover Management
  • Transparency, Collaboration, and Continuous Estimating
  • Construction Economic Forecast 2021 – Behind the Headlines
  • Historical Cost Tracking: Lessons During Setup and Implementation
  • Legal Pitfalls (and Opportunity) of Estimating
  • Preconstruction Possibilities – Realizing Your Potential ASPE

Then on Saturday, August 28th we listened to the State of Society by incoming President Chris Morton, FCPE (Chapter #5 member). Then we had breakouts for Regional Meetings.

Over the years I have had numerous communications with members via email or telephone calls, but at this event I was able to put faces to names. I look forward to seeing these old friends and new ones at future events.

Seeing our National Staff, Tina Cooke, Cinder McDonald and Natasha Crumbliss, I have a profound new appreciation for the hard work they do to organize and execute an Estimator’s Summit such as the one we experienced this year in San Antonio. I and more importantly we need to thank them more often for the hard work and effort they do on our behalf behind the scenes to make our National Association the professional organization it is today. I would be remiss if I did not also thank all the members that volunteer their time as Board Members and Committee Members for the vision to make ASPE this great professional organization.

Thank You.

Eric A. Ross, PE, CPE – Denver Chapter #5 is a Senior Engineer with Platt Rogers Construction.  He has over 35 years of experience in the construction industry, encompassing field management, design, engineering, estimating and estimating system development.
